The Government has announced changes to military awards in response to the independent review of the Battle of Long Tan recognition. It has also announced its response to the review of service recognition for RAAF Ubon (1965-68).

With the changing nature of warfare, and the high operational tempo required of the Australian Defence Force, Defence senior management recognised the appropriateness of reviewing the level of recognition provided to contemporary Australian defence activities.
The review was conducted by a three member panel – Brigadier Michael Kehoe (Retd), Mr Mark Stevens, and Mr Pat Clarke.
Wide consultation was conducted within Defence and also with appropriate external agencies, groups and individuals.
