The medals in this section cannot be classified as either long service awards or campaign medals but are significant in that they have been issued to recognise commitment by a wide cross-section of Defence personnel.
The Australian Defence Medal (ADM) was introduced to recognise the contribution of those who have served in the Australian Defence Force since the end of World War II and fulfilled their initial enlistment commitment, or served for four years, whichever is the lesser.
The Anniversary of National Service 1951-1972 Medal (ANSM) commemorates the 50th anniversary of the two national service schemes that operated in Australia during the 1950s and later from 1965 until 1972.
The ADM and ANSM are worn in the position notified by the Governor-General in The Order of Wearing Australian Honours and Awards.
