Why Long Tan?
The Battle of Long Tan holds a special place in the hearts and minds of Australians. In recognition of one of the defining moments in Australian military history, in August 2006 the then Prime Minister announced that it would be fitting to name the awards the ‘ADF Long Tan Leadership & Teamwork Awards’. It is also a fitting tribute to the Long Tan veterans, as the very traits they demonstrated such as determination, mateship, teamwork, tenacity, compassion and leadership, are the same attributes we hope to encourage and recognise in students.
How will students be recognised?
Winning students are selected by their school principal based on the criteria set out on the selection criteria sheet available as a download from this site. Each school may select one student from each of Years 10, 11 and 12. Recipients of a Long Tan Leadership & Teamwork Award will receive a certificate and a financial reward – $100 for a Year 10 student, $250 for a Year 11 student and $500 awarded to a Year 12 student. A copy of the award guidelines form is also available as a download.
When will the awards take place?
We will be calling for the names of award winners in Aug 2012, with cheques and certificates available for the winners by mid October. It is expected that the Awards will be presented to winners at the annual speech night or other appropriate major school assembly. Schools may request an ADF representative to make the presentation. This is best done via email when you confirm your intention to participate or if necessary when the names of award winners are finally confirmed. Early notice will give us the best chance of providing an ADF representative.
