Vision
To be the pre-eminent source of military international law and operations law advice.

Mission
To provide timely, accurate and practical advice on international law and operations law matters to the Department of Defence and Australian Government.

Responsibility
The Directorate of Operations and International Law is responsible for the provision of strategic level advice to the Department of Defence on operations and international law issues.

DOIL provides advice on legal matters affecting defence strategic policy and plans, operations, exercises and training, including the impact of international law, such as the law of the sea and the laws of armed conflict.

DOIL staff routinely provide comment on draft international treaties, draft DI (G)s, defence practice areas and naval waters, participate in inter-governmental committees, brief Commands, run courses and lectures, interact with the Australian Red Cross and provide legal input for exercises and operations.
