Major General the Honourable Justice RRS Tracey, RFD
Major General Tracey
was born in Melbourne in 1948 and graduated from the University of Melbourne
in 1969. He holds the degrees of LLB (Hons) and LLM from the University of
Melbourne and LLM from the University of Illinois.
Following graduation he served as Associate to the President of the Trade
Practices Tribunal and then returned to the University of Melbourne where
he held various academic appointments between 1972 and 1987. He was Sub-Dean
of the Faculty of Law at the University from 1977 to 1980.
He was admitted to practice in the ACT, NSW and Victoria in 1975. He joined
the Victorian Bar in 1982. He was appointed Queens Counsel in 1991 and became
a Judge of the Federal Court of Australia in 2006.
Major General Tracey joined the Australian Army Legal Corp in 1976. He was promoted
to Major in 1987, to Lieutenant Colonel in 1992, Colonel in 2002 and Brigadier
in 2007. He was appointed a Judge Advocate and Defence Force Magistrate in
1985 and became a Reviewing Judge Advocate in 1990. He has conducted legal
reviews of the reports of major boards of enquiry and appeared as counsel
assisting such boards. He has represented Defence Force personnel before
Parliamentary enquiries. He has performed exchange duties with the US 25
Infantry Division in Hawaii.
His other interests include bush walking, the theatre and classical languages.
