Defence: Intergovernmental Agreements

Member: Andrews

Mr Andrews asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence in writing, on 13 May 2009:

In respect of any intergovernmental agreements that exist in the Minister’s portfolio: (a) how many exist; (b) what are their (i) names, and (ii) objectives and purposes; (c) what are the names of the parties to each; and (d) will the Minister provide a copy of each; if not, why not.

Mr Combet - The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable member’s question:

  1. For a list of Defence’s inter-governmental agreements I refer the Honourable Member to the Council of Australian Government (COAG) website (www.coag.gov.au) and the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) website (www.dfat.gov.au/treaties).

An additional list of inter-governmental agreements (IGAs) that are not published on these websites can be found in the table below. However, due to the number of smaller IGAs Defence is committed to, the precise detail requested in the question is not readily available and I am not prepared to authorise the commitment of resources required to provide a detailed response.

Defence also has a number of classified IGAs that can not be listed for security reasons.
