Mr Melham asked the Minister for Defence, in writing, on 25 June 2008:
In respect of the response to question No. 4990 (Hansard, 26 February 2007, page 198) concerning the Defence property located at Allara Street in Civic ACT: can he indicate what the “original purpose of the site from the 1960s to early 1970s” was.
Mr Fitzgibbon - The answer to the honourable member's question is as follows:
No. Defence has been unable to substantiate this purpose due to the unavailability of records for that period. The site on Allara Street was empty prior to the commencement of construction of the depot in the late 1960s. The depot was purpose built for the Army Reserve, specifically the 3rd Battalion, The Royal New South Wales Regiment and the Australian National University Company of the Sydney University Regiment. There were no other users of this site between 1968 and 1972.
