Ms Vamvakinou asked the Minister representing the Minister for Defence, upon notice, on 4 June 2002:
- Are there plans to sell off part of the historical Maygar Barracks in Camp Road Broadmeadows; if so, (a) what is the time line for sale and (b) what size allotment is to be sold from the site.
- Will the Commonwealth consider giving some of the land proposed for sale back to the local community.
- How did the Commonwealth obtain the land where the present barracks stand.
Mrs Vale - The Minister for Defence has provided the following answer to the honourable member's question:
- Yes.
- Financial Year 2002/03
- 10 hectares of the Maygar Barracks site will be retained by Defence, and the remaining 50 hectares identified for disposal.
- The Commonwealth Property Disposals Policy states that Commonwealth Property, having no alternative efficient use, is to be sold on the open market at full market value. There are no provisions in the Policy to give some of the land to the local community.
- The property was purchased by Defence in 1915 from a local land owner.
