Primarily, the Works have or will involve the removal of existing Defence infrastructure, remediation and regrading of the soil and the provision of civil infrastructure for the land to be incorporated into the greater Randwick community.
The Works are aimed at remediating the land to minimise the effects of the Defence occupation of the area, whilst creating the framework for the area to be incorporated back into the surrounding residential neighbourhood and contributing valuable environmental, community and recreational benefits.
Generally, the Site Works have or will include the following activities:
- the removal of the disused Army and Navy buildings and infrastructure
- the thorough investigation of any contaminants in and around the soil and the remediation / treatment of these areas
- regrading of the existing ground profile to match the contours that existed on the Site before Defence occupation (known as the 'Post Commonwealth Works' levels)
- construction of civil infrastructure (roads, footpaths, underground services and utilities, etc.)
- landscaping of these streets and local parks including the planting of street trees
- construction of the new Randwick Community Centre
- construction of the new Army Oval
- bush regeneration and rehabilitation works within the proposed Randwick Environmental Park
- provision of amenities and viewing platforms and construction of a shared pedestrian / bicycle path throughout the proposed Randwick Environmental Park, connecting up with the street access network.
