Randwick Environmental Park

The Development Control Plan proposes a 13.1 hectare environmental park at the eastern end of the Site. The Randwick Environmental Park will adjoin a proposed neighbourhood park within the development precinct providing a contiguous open space area of 14.5 hectares.

The Randwick Environmental Park will conserve and enhance local vegetation of conservation significance, including threatened species, native bushland and a wetland, as well as providing community access and educational opportunities.

Public access will be provided via defined footpaths and cycleways and viewing platforms will provide the opportunity to experience the wetland and flora. The area of the former cricket oval will be used for passive recreational uses and will include barbeques and picnic shelters. The cleared southern end fringes of the park will also be available for passive recreation.

The natural bushland areas will be progressively regenerated using low key techniques focussing on weed removal to allow native species to regenerate.

The park boundary includes a buffer area around vegetation of conservation significance and the wetland of at least 10 metres. The Randwick Environmental Park is bounded by streets or other parks providing an accessible 'edge' to the park and a safer park environment.

The development and management of the Randwick Environmental Park is guided by a Plan of Management. Defence will fund the works to establish the park. Defence will also support Council in providing for the future maintenance of the Park

Ownership of the Park will be transferred to Council after construction is completed and it is anticipated that the Randwick Environmental Park will become a major recreational, educational and scientific resource for the local and wider communities.

Plan of Management

Randwick Environmental Park (REP) is located within the Department of Defence Land known as the Defence Site Bundock Street, Randwick. This Plan of Management (PoM) identifies three management zone types within Randwick Environmental Park: bushland, wetland and passive recreation.

The plan aims to appropriately manage the Park for the protection, conservation and enhancement of the bushland and wetland, while providing a range of passive recreational opportunities that are sympathetic to the bushland and wetland.

The implementation of this Plan of Management will ensure the protection, conservation and enhancement of natural heritage over time.
