Marrangaroo Army Depot Environmental Remediation Project - Project Update

The Marrangaroo contamination remediation work began on 9 February 2009. The work involved the excavation of landfill sites to remove lead and heavy metals from the soil by a Defence contractor who has expertise in managing un-exploded ordnance and other munitions.

During World War II, Marrangaroo was a known storage site for stocks of Chemical Weapons (CW).  Defence takes very seriously its responsibility for the safety of the surrounding community, and to those involved in this project. Consequently, Defence took a precautionary approach in the conduct of the works that remained in close contact with the local emergency service providers and the local residents.

Several suspected old WWII munition casings were uncovered during excavation works. Importantly, all excavated items have been confirmed to be empty of any chemical agent residues.

The excavation of burial areas in the remediation area has now been completed. The contractors are now undertaking final rehabilitation of the site.Defence wishes to thank the Lithgow community for the support of the Marrangaroo remediation works.
