Defence Site Maribyrnong is being assessed to ensure contamination resulting from past uses is identified and appropriate planning for remediation works is undertaken.

This is to allow for future uses and not pose an ongoing risk to human health or the environment. To date, a number of contaminants have been identified resulting from the site’s past use for explosives manufacturing and Defence research.

Upcoming assessment activities will include:

- Targeted assessment of soil and groundwater to
refine previous investigations;
- Assessment of the fabric of buildings; and
- Assessment of buildings within the former laboratory precinct for residual contamination associated with the Defence research undertaken.
