Headquarters Joint Operations Command Project - Weather

The HQJOC Site Weather Station Location Map shows the position of the automated weather station on the site for the new Headquarters facility. Construction of the automated weather station took place in November 2005.

The monthly meteorological report comprises the following information:

  • The first graph which shows maximum and minimum temperatures and rainfall (recorded daily)
  • The second graph which provides a visual presentation of average wind speed and direction in the form of a graphic 'wind rose'.
    • Wind roses are a visual presentation of the wind's direction, speed and frequency at a location over a period of time. These 'roses' are considered the best way to present wind conditions as they highlight predominant wind directions and intensities at the site throughout the month.
    • The Rose is arranged to present four main wind directions (North, East, South and West) and these quarters are broken into smaller intermediate (i.e. North East) and minor directions (i.e. NNE). Each arm of the wind rose covers wind directions falling within plus-or-minus 11.25 degrees from the central direction (eg NE). The wind direction is specified relative to true (geographic) north, and is the direction from which the wind is blowing. The length of the 'arm' of the wind rose represents the frequency of winds from that direction; i.e. the longer the arm is, the higher the frequency of wind from that direction. The frequencies are presented as percentages (eg 5%, 10%, 15%, 20%, 30%). Wind speed is represented by the thickness of the arm of the wind rose; i.e. the thicker the arm, the higher the wind speed. For these wind roses different colours record different wind speeds. Calm conditions represent periods when the wind speed falls below 0.5 metres per second. The different 'roses' show day and night time conditions (daytime is between 6 am and 6 pm). Further information is available on Wind Rose interpretation at http://www.bom.gov.au/climate/averages/wind/wind_rose.shtml
  • A table which provides a more detailed summary of daily weather data (and from which the two graphs are derived)
