Defence Environmental Remediation Program

Defence adopts a risk based approach to managing contamination across the Defence estate. This approach considers the potential risks to human health and the environment, whilst contributing to management strategies regarding the current and future land use activities.

Incidences of contamination, whether known or suspected, are assessed against a range of criteria, using the Contamination Risk Assessment Tool, to provide individual site risk rankings. These site rankings contribute to an overall contamination risk ranking for the property and assists in the prioritisation of appropriate actions, including further investigations or, if necessary, remediation of the site.

Contaminated sites are managed through four project stages outlined in more detail on the Contamination Project Delivery page

Stage 1: Desktop assessment and site inspection

Stage 2: Intrusive Sampling and Analysis Investigations

Stage 3: Remediation Design

Stage 4: Undertaking Remediation

Further information on the management of Contamination in Defence can be found in the Defence Contamination Management Strategy
