Aircraft Noise

Military airfields play a significant role in the Defence strategy for Australia. There is a need to protect the operational integrity of Defence airfields not only because of their strategic importance but also because Defence establishments such as RAAF Bases play a major role in the local community and regional economy.  For Defence airfields to continue operate safely it is essential that land uses on non-Commonwealth owned land around these airfields are compatible with Defence activities.  In determining compatible land use planning around RAAF bases, for example, there are a number of issues whic need to be considered such as Building Height Controls and Aircraft Noise Intrusion.

Aircraft Noise

Aircraft noise is a factor which has attracted a great deal of community attention in the vicinity of civilian aerodromes and military airfields around the world.  Noise can be generated in a community from a number of different sources, however, in the proximity of airfields, aircraft noise is often the loudest and most readily identifiable single source of noise.

The most effective means of reducing the negative reaction of the local communities to the impact of aircraft noise is through proper land use planning.  In order to ensure that the land around civilian aerodromes and military airfields in Australia is approprietly planned, the concept of the Australian Noise Exposure Forecast (ANE)F was developed and is presented in a form of the ANEF maps.  Click here to see the ANEF maps produced for the military airfields in Australia.

To monitor and record the noise impact of aircraft operations at military airfields (and this includes the Joint Military Airfields and Civilian Aerodromes (such as Darwin and Townsville), the Department of Defence installed the Noise and Flight Path Monitoring System (NFPMS) RAAF Bases Williamtown, NSW, and Amberley, QLD, and at HMAS ALBATROSS, NSW.  Defence is progressing with the installation of the system at RAAF Bases Darwin and Townsville. Results of the flight path and noise monitoring is published in Quarterly and Annual reports.  Click here to see the NFPMS reports available to date.
