ADF Health September 2001 - Volume 2 Number 2From the EditorMoving ahead
Commencing with this issue, ADF Health will now be available on the Internet in portable document format (PDF). Now, via the the World Wide Web, ADF Health will be more widely visible to potential readers in Australia and overseas, and a growing archive of articles will be readily available to all. ADF Health is available at the Defence Health Service website: <http://www.defence.gov.au/dpe/dhs/>. What is PDF? "Portable document format" is a standard means of displaying electronic documents using a freely available document reader called Adobe Acrobat (Adobe is the software company that developed the system). PDF files can be easily viewed on screen and are also readily printed out. The free Acrobat reader can be downloaded from the Adobe website at <http://adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep.html>. Since 1994, the Defence Health Service has supported ADF deployments with the United Nations commitment to the largest island of the Solomons group, Bougainville, situated east of Papua New Guinea. The back cover article of this issue features the Defence Health Service facility at Loholo, Bougainville, and contains a brief overview of past and present health issues in this peacekeeping mission. The ADF deployment to the island of Timor, to the southwest of Papua New Guinea, in support of the UN administration of East Timor, has been operational since 1999. Both ADF commitments are ongoing, and the overall success of these operations thus far is in no small measure due to the excellence and dedication of both the full-time and part-time personnel of the Defence Health Service. In the last issue, I introduced a brief update article entitled "Malaria in the ADF". This is to be a regular feature of ADF Health, and Major Scott Kitchener, on behalf of the Army Malaria Institute, Enoggera, Queensland, has provided a further report from the central malaria registry maintained by AMI (see inside back cover). On behalf of the editorial board, I would like to thank the members of the Defence Health Service who have offered articles for publication, and the many others who have contributed to the peer review of those manuscripts. We are also grateful for the support of our readers. I look forward to the continuing growth of the Journal, and I encourage all our readers to make themselves writers as well, by submitting articles for publication. Editor, ADF Health
