Between 1 Jan 2006 and 30 Jun 2006, seven new cases of malaria were reported. Four cases have arisen from Operation Wantok Warrior, which was based around Wewak in Papua New Guinea. All four members contracted the Vivax form of malaria on return to Australia. The other three cases involved members serving with the United Nations in Sudan. All three were diagnosed in country with the Falciparum form of malaria. There have been no further cases involving members serving in the Solomon Islands or East Timor. Malaria reportingAll Health Service personnel are encouraged to notify the Central Malaria Registry promptly when a malaria casualty is detected.
