ADF Health April 2005 - Volume 6 Number 1Defence Health Service tsunami deploymentOn behalf of the Defence Health Service, we extend our appreciation and gratitude for the recent successful deployment by members of the Defence Health Service to the devastated lands of Australia’s northern neighbours. The Defence Health Service acknowledges the professionalism of its members in responding so promptly and with complete dedication to render aid to the stricken survivors of the seismic cataclysm of Boxing Day 2004. Tsunamis that cause very heavy loss of life and overwhelming destruction of large tracts of land, leaving hundreds of thousands of injured survivors spread over a wide area of the world, seldom occur more than once in a century. This tectonic event has provided a major impetus to advance the concept of the global village. People of all nations and creeds have unselfishly and immediately rendered physical aid and financial support to commence the rehabilitation of the destitute and injured survivors. The proficiency and goodwill exhibited by the health care personnel have been outstanding, and have served to enhance the esteem of the single Services and the Australian Defence Force, as well as Australia as a nation. The nation owes a significant debt of appreciation and recognition to all ADF active service and Reserve health care personnel, and to our civilian colleagues, who give their time and strenuous efforts to tend and succour the needy, sick, injured and displaced people in the severely stricken areas. Once again, to all those health care personnel, many thanks for a job very well done indeed. Air Vice-Marshal Bruce Short, RFD, MBBS, FRACP, FCCP, FACP, FACTM Air Commodore Tony K Austin, AM, MBBS, DipAvMed, DipAdminStud, MPH, FRACGP, FRACMA
