New South Wales

Whooping cough alert NSW Health has today issued a health alert warning people, especially parents, to be on the look out for the symptoms of whooping cough following an increase in cases across NSW.

12 Sep 2008 South Australia Increase in Notifications of Pertussis in SA The CDCB has been notified of a higher than usual number of pertussis cases across SA in the last few months, consistent with observed patterns of epidemics every 4-5 years. To assist in reducing infections, an update on new features of pertussis investigation and control is outlined below.
11 Sep 2008 Western Australia Algal bloom at lower Swan Estuary The Department of Health is advising people not to eat wild shellfish after tests confirmed the presence of a potentially toxic algae in the lower Swan Estuary between the Narrows Bridge and Armstrong Spit.
11 Sep 2008 Western Australia Ross River virus risk in South-West of WA The Department of Health today reminded people living and holidaying in the South-West of WA to take extra care against mosquito bites following evidence of Ross River virus (RRV) activity earlier in the season than usual.
22 Aug 2008 Northern Territory Flu Alert - The annual influenza season has arrived in the Northern Territory and the Department of Health and Families Centre for Disease Control is urging the public to get vaccinated.
1 Aug 2008 South Australia Measles case in Adelaide Metropolitan Region The CDCB has been notified of a case of measles in a 37 year old female from Adelaide with onset of illness on 19 July 2008.
28 Jun 2008 New South Wales Renewed measles warning - NSW Health has today renewed its warning to the community to be on the look out for the symptoms of measles amid concerns of a possible outbreak.
26 Jun 2008 South Australia Mycobacterial abscesses following ‘mesotherapy' - The Communicable Disease Control Branch has received reports of a number of people who have developed multiple skin abscesses on the calves, buttocks, thighs, abdomen, shoulders, face and neck following administration of an alternative therapy known as 'mesotherapy' or ‘biomesotherapy'
28 May 2008 South Australia Extension of recall of Clexane - SA Health (Government of South Australian) advises Sanofi-Aventis, in consultation with the Therapeutic Goods Administration is now recalling an additional batch of Clexan.
5 May 2008 Victoria GP Alert for Legionnaires' Disease The Communicable Disease Prevention and Control Unit (CDP&CU) has been notified of three cases of Legionnaires' disease that have all had a common exposure in the Werribee area.
2 May 2008 Northern Territory Mosquito-borne disease warning for the Top End - The NT Department of Health and Community Services (DHCS) has issued a warning for the potentially fatal Murray Valley encephalitis (MVE) virus disease, and Kunjin virus disease for the Top End of the NT, including the Katherine region, from now until the end of June
29 Apr 2008 Western Australia The Western Australia Department of Health has upgraded its warning on mosquito-borne disease in the Kimberley and Pilbara.
23 Apr 2008 South Australia Clexane Recall - SA Health (Government of South Australian) advises the Therapeutic Goods Administration has recalled five batches of the anticoagulant Clexane (enoxaparin) due to the detection of an impurity in the affected batches
7 Apr 2008 Western Australia Mosquito-borne disease spreads to the Pilbara - The Western Australia Department of Health is urging people living and holidaying in WA's north to take extra care against mosquito bites due to the increased risk of mosquito-borne viruses in the Kimberley and Pilbara regions.
2 Apr 2008 South Australia The Department of Health, South Australia has been notified of a higher than usual number of Shigella cases in the north-eastern suburbs of metropolitan Adelaide and across a number of rural and remote areas. Cases are being investigated and public health action is being implemented to limit the spread.
28 Mar 2008 Victoria The Victorian Department of Human Services warns residents and visitors to Kerang in northern Victoria to avoid mosquito bites following confirmation of Murray Valley encephalitis virus in the area.
28 Mar 2008 Northern Territory The Northern Territory Department of Health and Community Services warns Top Enders to cover up and protect themselves from a potentially fatal mosquito-borne disease, Murray Valley encephalitis, following recent heavy rains.
18 Mar 2008 New South Wales NSW Health Minister, Reba Meagher, has advised people living in or travelling to rural parts of NSW over Easter to cover up and avoid mosquito bites in light of recent increases in mosquitoborne diseases. Public health experts have advised that Ross River and Barmah Forest virus infections have risen over the warmer months in rural areas.
28 Feb 2008 Western Australia The Western Australia Department of Health has issued a warning to residents and visitors to the Kimberley, Pilbara, Gascoyne, Murchison, Midwest and Goldfields regions to avoid mosquito bites in the coming weeks.
6 Feb 2008 Queensland The Queensland Department of Health urges residents of Mossman to protect themselves against dengue fever, with two confirmed locally-acquired cases.
22 Jan 2008 Northern Territory The Northern Territory Department of Health and Community Services is renewing its warning to Top End residents and visitors to protect themselves from the potentially life-threatening disease melioidosis.
