Defence Injury Prevention Programme

The Defence Injury Prevention Program (DIPP) addresses injury using a safe communities model where the community is empowered to control their own issues using local knowledge and expertise. DIPP collects injury information to produce injury surveillance reports which highlight the number and type of injuries within the establishment. Personnel analyse and interpret reports and then derive countermeasures which address the circumstances leading to the injury. Thus injury surveillance activities are not directed specifically to the individual but to situations which lead to injury.

DIPP provides the training to enable personnel to perform the injury prevention activities. The training package has been endorsed and received recognition as a Registered Training Organisation.

Focus and performance

The Inspector General (IG) Division published a report on the effectiveness of DIPP in July 2006. The evaluation recommended that the DIPP be retained as the Defence’s structured approach to injury prevention and outlined a list of priorities with a timetable for enactment. Two priorities outlined included deriving an authoritative instruction and targeting injury prevention training so that DIPP has the greatest impact. A Defence Instruction was presented to the Project Management Board in March 2007 for consideration by the Services.

DIPP training is well progressed against the IG mandated timelines. DIPP training was delivered at Kapooka, Townsville, ALTC, ADFA and HMAS Creswell. DIPP also teaches injury prevention modules annually to the initial and advanced PTI courses for the PTI School.
