The Government is committed to recognising the service and sacrifices of ADF personnel and the important and valuable role their families play in the achievement of the Defence mission. The families of those serving Australia deserve full support and this trial is aimed at evaluating a model of healthcare that will benefit our ADF families.
Stage 1 of the trial commenced on 1 May 2009 in the following locations, with approximately 2,700 dependants eligible to register for the trial:In line with the Government’s election promise to progressively extend free basic medical and dental care, Stage 2 of the trial commenced on 1 October to approximately 13,300 additional dependants in:
Medical benefits included in the trial are those eligible medical treatments provided by a medical practitioner in a general practice setting, accessed from within the local community. Flexible models for delivery of medical benefits have been implemented to suit the demographic of each of the trial locations. When accessing medical treatment in the location in which you reside, you must utilise the model applicable to that location. When accessing medical treatment at other trial locations, you must use the model applicable to that location.
Dental services included in the ADF Family Health Trial include non-cosmetic items, capped at $300 per registered dependant per calendar year. Dental services can be accessed at any dentist anywhere in Australia. As the trial does not require dentists to register for the trial, registered dependants can continue to use their current dentist to access dental benefits.
The Director General Corporate Health Management, AIRCDRE Tracy Smart, is taking the opportunity where possible to visit trial regions to discuss the trial with members and families. To date, AIRCDRE Smart has visited Sale, Katherine, Karratha, Puckapunyal, Cairns and Townsville. The latest ADF Family Health presentation is current as at 7 October 2009. In addition, information packs regarding the trial have been distributed to families in the trial locations, and there has been an excellent response.
The ADF Family Health Directorate would like to see all registrations processed as quickly as possible; however, there are still a large number of registrations unable to be processed due to inconsistencies with PMKeyS or the provision of incomplete forms.
