Enhancing Resilience and Well Being in the ADF

ImageIf elected, the Rudd Labor Government, through its Election 07 policy document committed to ensuring the very best mental health support is available to Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel and the ex-service community. To achieve this the Rudd Labor Government proposed to implement an ADF Mental Health Lifecycle Package of mental health research and innovative interventions, in partnership with the Australian Centre for Posttraumatic Mental Health (ACPMH).

The ADF Mental Health Lifecycle Package includes nine strategic mental health initiatives targeted across the four stages of an ADF member’s lifecycle including recruitment, service, transition and resettlement into civilian life. Three of the initiatives have been identified as ADF deliverables, two of which are related to psychological resilience:

  1. Longitudinal study of psychological resilience in ADF recruits, and
  2. review and evaluate existing ADF resilience programs with a view to expanding and enhancing the programs.

The Directorate of Strategic Personnel Policy Research (DSPPR) has implemented a five year study of retention in the ADF through Project LASER (Longitudinal ADF Study Evaluating Retention). The data collection procedure and constructs being measured for Project LASER are similar to that proposed for the Resilience Study. A proposal has been developed by ACPMH in consultation with DSPPR and the Directorate of Mental Health (DMH), to incorporate the resilience study into Project LASER.

The ADF is working tirelessly in developing Resilience training for our personnel deploying on operations within and outside of Australia, within a non-deployed ship or base and on training courses to better equip our people to lead and be able cope better in any situation.
