DMO Materiel Graduate Scheme - Procurement and Contracting

Josh Stewart

The Procurement and Contracting Pathway provided 18 months of concentrated practical application of my tertiary education. The highlight was three, six-month rotations in locations across Australia where I immersed myself in, and learned about, the business of Defence.

Josh cited two main reasons for joining the Procurement and Contracting Pathway, and they come from opposite ends of the career spectrum: one ambitious and one altruistic.

The Defence Materiel Organisation is one of the largest procurement and project management organisations in Australia. It offers numerous opportunities for employment in areas with interesting, complex and diverse projects. Not only do jobs in the DMO allow for the fascinating practical application of commercial skills to big budget projects, but offers employment in the pursuit of a noble cause—supporting the men and women of the Australian Defence Force.

It was for these reasons I was initially attracted to applying for a position that allowed me to apply my skills, grow my experience and operate within the dynamic defence industry.

Apart from offering the perfect transition between the theory of university and the practical realties of a profession, Josh said it was the chance to make new personal and professional contacts across the country that was a highlight.

Josh said that as a former graduate, he is 'uniquely placed' to understand the complex issues he deals with as an in-house commercial lawyer for DMO. I have the ability to quickly assess and understand legal problems, based on insights gained during the Pathway. This places me at a professional advantage every day.

Josh completed this Development Pathway in January 2012.
