DMO Materiel Graduate Scheme - Procurement and Contracting

Chen Xu

The Procurement and Contracting Pathway provided a unique kick-start to my career. It offered me the opportunity to work on some of the most complex and demanding projects in the country, involving cutting-edge military technology, in a supportive and professional atmosphere. I could travel the country seeking out the most interesting procurement activities and be paid a great graduate salary for it!

Chen said, 'There are so many benefits to having been a grad in this Pathway'. In particular, she said her intake year was a 'ready-made group of friends' and that she had had 'the pleasure of working with experienced and inspirational supervisors and colleagues'.

From day one my roles were challenging and varied—I worked with maritime, aerospace and electronic systems. It was a great personal journey and the skills and experience I gained while in the Pathway have been invaluable. As for the best bit, for me nothing quite beats listening to the roar of F/A-18 Hornet fighter engines seemingly metres away from my desk.

Chen said she believed the Pathway would prove to be an excellent platform for the rest of my career. She said, I learned a lot very quickly about procurement in the Defence Materiel Organisation and the Department, as a direct result of my three rotations. The experience and networks I gained in the 18-month program have led to great career opportunities for me. Put simply, I would not be where I am today had I not been in the Procurement and Contracting Pathway.

Chen is now working to create a range of sustainment contracts for the RAN Canberra Class ships, HMAS Canberra and HMAS Adelaide, currently being built and due to enter into service in 2014 and 2015 respectively.

Chen completed this Development Pathway in January 2010.
