Defence Pathways - Graduate Development Program - People

Bronwen Smith

The opportunities and exposure throughout the Pathway were fantastic. I was offered a range of opportunities I might not have had access to otherwise. The social aspect is also great; getting to know people from all over the country and developing a network of colleagues.

It was the training and development that convinced Bronwen Smith she should apply to join Defence's People Pathway as a graduate. I was able to participate in both generalised training offered throughout the year as part of the Pathway, as well as specialised training and development within each of my rotations. The exposure to different areas of the Department throughout the year gave me a more comprehensive understanding of the work it does.

Bronwen said taking part in this Pathway gave her 'a strong platform to build my career within Defence'.

I have regularly drawn on knowledge I acquired within my placements during the Pathway within my roles beyond the program. The training has equipped me with a strong skills base that has supported me in my career since.

Bronwen is now working as a Program Manager within the Strategic & Operational Mental Health area. She manages policies and programs that support soldiers and families before, during, and after deployment to areas of operation.

Asked what advice she would give future graduates, she said, Just to give it a go. You can't predict where the Pathway will take you or what experiences you will have, but if you embrace it, you can gain a lot from the opportunity.

Bronwen completed this Development Pathway in 2010.
