Defence Pathways - Graduate Development Program - People

Andrew Olsen

One of the best parts of the People Pathway was being exposed to such a wide variety of opportunities, such as taking regional rotations and having the opportunity to live and work on a military base in the Northern Territory. That was an amazing experience that will stay with me for a while.

Andrew 'specifically joined Defence' as a graduate to work in Indigenous affairs, something he said he was 'very passionate about'. He said, I felt that being part of the People Pathway would give me the best opportunity to gain experience and work in Indigenous affairs. I also felt that having the opportunity to work in three different areas would give me the greatest opportunity to build not only my professional skills, but my understanding of Defence.

On the work front, Andrew said having the opportunity to hear … prominent senior leaders at Defence speak to graduates on a wide variety of topics such as professional development, past job experience, how they got to their current role, what it is, what their specific group or service does and the role we all play in Defence, was a highlight. Hearing people like Chief of Army speak to you about his career is something that really inspires you.

Socially, Andrew said, Being part of the 2011 cohort was something very special, as we are a very close group. I would have never thought I would have found work colleagues who are as close to me as my own family.

Andrew completed this Development Pathway in 2011.
