Who we recruit

The Australian Defence Organisation (ADO) is recruiting graduates in five (5) specific development streams:

  1. Generalist
  2. People
  3. Finance
  4. Infrastructure
  5. Information

Generalist Stream

Regardless of the graduate's academic background, the Generalist Stream provides graduates with an overview of the opportunities available across the ADO. The three rotations offered to the graduates encompass the whole of the ADO.


To enter as a generalist, you will need a Credit average in an undergraduate or postgraduate degree completed by January 2013. As a generalist you will develop the necessary professional skills required for a long-lasting career. In each rotation you will have real tasks and responsibilities, and be fully integrated into the work team to ensure you contribute to your full potential.


We are committed to helping you further by providing a suite of training specifically designed for the GDP covering leadership, technical, departmental and APS wide skills.


Rotations in the graduate program may include:

  • Sea Power Centre;
  • Future Land Warfare;
  • International Policy Development;
  • Intelligence assessment and national security;
  • Ministerial and Parliamentary Liaison;
  • Strategic management in Navy, Army or Air Force; and
  • Event coordination.

People Stream


We need motivated graduates with high levels of personal drive and integrity who will contribute to building, developing and sustaining ADO's people capability. We offer professional supervision and ensure that you are exposed to a wide range of issues and opportunities to enable you to contribute to people management and strategic people issues.


We recruit in 4 sub-streams:

  1. Occupational Health & Safety - encompassing graduates with Health Science and Environmental Health degrees;
  2. Workforce Planning - encompassing Organisational Psychologists, Statisticians and graduates with research backgrounds;
  3. Training & Development - encompassing graduates of Education, with a major component of degree in Organisational Learning and Adult Education; and
  4. HRM - including Industrial Relations, Employee Relations, HR development and Social Work.


People Stream graduates contribute to building, developing and sustaining ADO's "people capability", and in a workforce of more than 104,000 is a tremendous job! Two of the three rotations will be undertaken in an area with a people focus.

  • Strategic Personnel Policy Research;
  • Workforce Modelling Forecasting & Analysis;
  • Workplace Relations;
  • Education & Training;
  • Fairness & Resolution;
  • Strategic Reform Program;
  • Defence Community Organisation; and
  • HR Service Delivery

Finance Stream


We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and professional graduates who are adaptable, innovative and work cohesively in team environments.  We expect you to become trusted financial advisors to senior managers across Defence. You will be self-aware, display loyalty and consider integrity as a key personal value. We, in return, are committed to your future development, expanding your skills through technical and theoretical training.


At the conclusion of the Program, many Finance graduates also go on to complete CPA or CA qualifications, with financial support and personal encouragement from Defence. The graduates who are selected in the Finance Stream must work two rotations in the Chief Finance Officer Group, and one rotation, in a different (generalist) area to gain a broader understanding of the whole of Defence.


Areas you may work in are:

  • Drafting Financial & Accounting Policy;
  • Management of Workforce Resources;
  • Preparation & Consolidation of Capital & Operational Budgets;
  • Involvement in Financial Submissions to Cabinet & High Level Committees; and
  • Assisting with Auditing & Compliance.

Infrastructure Stream

We seek professional and innovative team-players to help design, manage, maintain and develop one of Australia’s largest and most diverse real estate portfolios to keep pace with Defence’s changing capabilities.


We manage approximately $15 billion worth of land and facilities including training areas, command headquarters, air fields, wharfs and accommodation. Defence has 394 owned properties and 72 significant bases both in Australia and overseas. Many of the properties controlled by Defence are recognised internationally for their conservation or heritage values.


We are recruiting graduates in five sub-streams:

  • Engineering- Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Communication;
  • Environmental- Sciences, Management, Law;
  • Construction & Building Management, including Architecture;
  • Planning- Strategic/Urban & Regional/ Town/Master; and
  • Law- Property


Areas you may be involved in include:

  • Responsibility for engaging & managing a team of consultants & contractors for the development & delivery of projects such as aircraft hangers, ship repair facilities, Military training facilities, & specialised research & technical facilities;
  • Master planning of major Defence establishments;
  • Developing policy to protect Defence from external land use conflict;
  • Liaising & forming partnerships with all levels of Government; and
  • Assessing development impacts on the sustainability of the Defence Estate as well as off base impacts of Defence operations..

Information Stream


We are looking for strategic thinkers to help solve Defence's challenges in the management of information.  You will become part of our team working to project manage and implement IT solutions to business problems. We expect you to become the future Defence leaders in Information Management. 

We are looking for graduates to work within the Defence Information Environment (DIE) to ensure that Defence has the best and most efficient information environment, now and into the future. 


Discipline recruiting those with tertiary qualifications in Information and Communication Technology (ICT).
We are offering careers in:

  • Project Management;
  • Business Analysis;
  • Systems Administration;
  • Enterprise Architecture; and
  • ICT Security

Note the areas mentioned above are only examples of the hundreds of areas within the ADO that offer real experiences to the successful graduates.
