Intelligence Analysts are creative, energetic people who can take complex and rapidly changing issues, conduct in-depth analysis and clearly communicate their judgements. Due to the diverse and dynamic nature of our work we are looking for people with strong critical thinking, foreign languages, research and analysis, teamwork and communication skills and not a specific tertiary qualification. Your ability to work as part of a team is also vital as this will develop and hone your tradecraft skills and achieve effective outcomes for Defence Intelligence Agencies.

Overview:

Pathway highlights:

  • Exposure to high profile Defence, Government and National Intelligence Community representatives
  • Opportunity to make a real contribution to maintaining Australia’s national security
  • Unique opportunities for talented people to develop and expand their skills
  • Opportunity to work in support of the Australian Defence Force both within and outside of Australia

As a graduate in this Pathway, you will evaluate information from a variety of classified and unclassified sources. This information can often be incomplete, contradictory and vary widely in terms of reliability. As an analyst you will examine a diverse set of countries, issues (such as terrorism) and cultures. Consequently our analysts come from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines.

Your ability to think critically and creatively to solve hard problems is crucial. This will involve identifying patterns, trends, relationships and indicators to develop meaningful and useful intelligence for senior government decision-makers, the Australian Defence Force and others. Intelligence Analysts undertake a development program in Canberra as follows:

DIGO Geospatial Intelligence Analysts combine imagery and geospatial data with other intelligence sources and collateral information to produce in-depth, contextual analysis in the form of visualisation products and textual reports. Your reporting will be disseminated to a wide and varied audience, often in a time-critical capacity and you may also be required to brief your analysis to high-profile Government representatives.

Defence Intelligence Organisation analysts perform fast-paced and varied work. You will analyse complex issues and formulate key assessments of future scenarios. You will engage with preeminent organisations from think tanks to Australian and foreign counterparts. Through this engagement and opportunities for travel and overseas deployments you will retain currency on strategic issues. Your work will shape ADF planning and Defence and whole-of-government policy.

DSD Intelligence Analysts contribute to foreign intelligence and security advice by performing such activities as analysis of foreign signals, intelligence reporting, communications analysis, foreign language translation or solving cryptologic problems using advanced mathematical concepts. After a taste of the diverse and unique work which DSD is involved in, you will have the foundations for a rewarding career solving the difficult problems that others cannot solve.

Through in-house training and development you will become a subject matter expert, making a difference to national security, while developing skills and experience that are highly sought after within the Australian Intelligence Community, as well as government and private sectors.
