Training
Combining training and development and work place rotations builds a solid base from which a graduate can launch their career in Defence and the broader Australian Public Service. Training offered to graduates can include:
- Defence and Ministerial Writing;
- Communicating with Influence;
- Policy Advice;
- Simple Procurement;
- Leadership and Supervisory Skills; and
- Strategic Thinking.
Other specific training is provided to the Finance Stream, Information Stream, Infrastructure Stream and People Stream graduates.
Following the development year, further personal and professional development opportunities are actively encouraged. Defence can offer a variety of assistance, ranging from study leave to financial assistance through the Defence “Studybank” program.
Study Tour
The Study Tour provides an invaluable opportunity to observe first hand the core business of the Australian Defence Force (ADF). It allows graduates to develop an insight into the contribution of Defence APS employees in supporting ADF roles and responsibilities.
Senior Officer Briefings
As part of the training and development component of the GDP, Senior Officers from each of the groups within the Department are invited to brief the graduates on what their particular Groups responsibilities are. The senior officer also provides an insight into their career. This allows graduates to gain insights into particular areas that they may not have been exposed to during their rotations and provide valuable career planning advice.
