Stage 1 – Online application

Applications will be open online in February 2013.

Applicants are required to complete an on-line application for entry into the stream and development program of their choice. Up to three program preferences can be selected.

Applicants are then asked to address selection criteria and provide details of academic background, relevant skills, qualifications, current and previous employment, and to nominate referees.

To ensure your application reaches the best possible standard, it is recommended that applicants read the Hints and Tips for Writing your Application before applying.

The application – Step by Step

Step 1.

Personal Details: Please complete all personal details as some of these will be used to assess your eligibility for the program.

Step 2.

Program Preferences: When applying through the Defence Graduate Application portal, you will be asked to select your preferred career stream (e.g. IT, HR, Science & Health, Engineering, etc), and then to select the preferred development program (e.g. IDP, GDP, MGS or Navy CEDP) associated with that development stream.

Depending upon which career stream selected, only those programs offering a development pathway associated with that stream will be displayed for selection.

Candidates who select the Intelligence & Security career stream or those who select the IDP as a preference will be asked to further refine their preferences by development pathway and agency.

Step 3.

Educational qualifications: Applicants will then be asked to provide details regarding your educational qualifications. Please ensure you include the degree completed that is most closely associated with your first preference at this point in the application.

You will be provided opportunity to describe and upload any further qualifications obtained, including secondary degrees, industry certifications, or professional recognition at the end of the application.

Step 4.

Referees: Applicants will be asked to supply details for two referees. It is preferred that referees be someone who knows your skills and abilities in relation to work or study, however character referees are acceptable as long as they are not family members.

Step 5.

Responses to Selection Criteria: Selection criteria provide a set of measurable standards against which employers can assess your application. Defence uses capability identified within the Defence APS Core Capability Framework to measure and rank applicants responses to each question on the application.

The criteria being assessed are identified within the context of each question. Applicants are strongly advised to read our Hints and Tips for completing your application prior to submitting your application.

Step 6.

Additional skills, qualifications and experience: Applicants should include in this area reference to any additional information that you feel should be considered in the context of your application. We are looking for additional skills, hobbies, interests, certifications or qualifications of note, including travel or awards and recognition for achievements.
