What We’ve Done So Far

The ADF already has a suite of flexible working arrangements so members can better balance their work and personal lives. It has also introduced several initiatives to enhance recruitment and retention including the programs outlined below.

New Generation Navy (Defweb only)

Adaptive Army

Army Women's Forum (Defweb only)

Air Force Adaptive Culture Program (Defweb only)

Defence roundtables

In 2008, the former Minister for Defence Science and Personnel, the Honourable Warren Snowdon MP, hosted 17 meetings around Australia with ADF and Australian Public Service women.

The meetings were held with women from all ranks, levels and backgrounds. The meetings canvassed a wide range of issues facing men and women in the ADF and Defence today, and explored ways to improve the participation of women.

This led to the establishment of the Reference Group on Women by the Chief of the Defence Force in 2008. The reference group and roundtable recommendations covered the spectrum of issues, from attraction, career management and professional development, to flexible working arrangements, childcare, housing and support mechanisms.
