Implementation & Operation

The 2016-2020 Defence Environmental Plan (the Plan) lays out specific actions, timeframes and responsibilities for achievement of the Defence Environmental Vision, as defined in the 2016 Defence Environmental Policy (the Policy) and following the strategic aims and priorities in the Defence Environmental Strategy 2016-2036.

The Plan has been developed for a five year period from 2016 to 2020 (inclusive) in consultation with key stakeholders.

The Plan is both informed by, and informs the Defence Environmental Policy and 2016-2036 Environmental Strategy and as such is linked to broader Defence strategic guidance and corporate planning, including the Defence Estate Strategy. It informs thematic strategies, programs, tools and systems to manage individual environmental factors.

The Plan applies to the Defence undertaking as a whole, including all land, aerospace and maritime activities.  As described in the Plan, the term ‘environment’ is taken to include policy and processes around the following environmental matters:

  • Climate Change (including natural hazards)
  • Waste and Product Stewardship
  • Pollution Prevention
  • Contamination Management
  • Biodiversity Conservation
  • Resource Efficiency
  • Landscape sustainability
  • Heritage

Exclusions: The scope does not include the operating environment (terrain, weather), international environmental intelligence or matters relating to environmental health or workplace health and safety.

Following finalisation of consultation The Plan will been endorsed at the 3* / Band3 level and will be delivered through the Defence Environmental Management Forum (DEMF) with enterprise level representation.

Each action has a designated party accountable for delivery and reporting against the action.

The performance of the Plan will be monitored through the Defence Environmental Management Forum (DEMF) and will undergo minor review on an annual basis including a major renewal every five years to ensure it reflects Government direction and will achieve the environmental vision.
