PFAS Investigation &
Management Program

RAAF Base Townsville

Townsville Investigation Summary

Defence commenced a detailed environmental investigation to better understand the nature and extent of PFAS on and around RAAF Base Townsville in March 2017. The investigation is expected to take around 12 months to complete.

In 2016, Defence completed a Preliminary Sampling Program at 12 Defence sites including RAAF Base Townsville. Based on the outcome of this program it was determined that the base will undergo a detailed environmental investigation.

The PFAS environmental investigations are conducted in accordance with the National Environmental Protection (Assessment of Site Contamination) Measure 1999 (NEPM). Visit the Investigation Process page to view a summary of this process.

The most recent community information session was conducted on 14 June 2017.

Defence is working continuously towards the effective monitoring and management of PFAS contamination and continues to engage with industry experts both nationally and internationally to identify the best management options for PFAS throughout Australia. More information on the current activities being undertaken by Defence can be found at the Management Activities page.
