Defence commenced a detailed environmental investigation to better understand the nature and extent of PFAS on and around RAAF Base Learmonth in September 2017. The investigation is expected to be completed in late 2018.
The PFAS environmental investigations are conducted in accordance with the National Environmental Protection (Assessment of Site Contamination) Measure 1999 (NEPM). Visit the Investigation Process page to view a summary of this process.
The first stage of the investigation, the Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI) commenced in September 2017. The PSI will involve a review of the historical use and storage of legacy fire fighting foams at the Base. The purpose of this review is to identify PFAS sources, migration pathways and receptors.
The findings of the historical review will be used to develop a Sampling Analysis and Quality Plan (SAQP) that will detail the sampling and testing proposed on and in the vicinity of the Base.
Defence is working continuously towards the effective monitoring and management of PFAS contamination and continues to engage with industry experts both nationally and internationally to identify the best management options for PFAS throughout Australia. On 30 November the Department of Defence held a Community Walk-in Session at Exmouth to provide the community with the findings of the preliminary site investigation into per- and poly- fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on and in the vicinity of RAAF Base Learmonth.
