Summary of the Investigation

Jervis Bay Range Facility
In January 2017, Defence commenced a detailed environmental investigation into the presence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on and in the vicinity of Jervis Bay Range Facility.

The objective of this environmental investigation is to identify the nature and extent of PFAS in the environment from the use of legacy fire-fighting foam at the Base.

The three stages to the investigation are outlined below:

Preliminary Site Investigation
The first stage of the investigation, the Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI), has been completed.

Detailed Site Investigation
The second stage of the investigation, the Detailed Site Investigation (DSI), started in April 2017 and involves sampling of soil, sediment, surface water (land and creeks) and groundwater to collect information and better understand how PFAS moves through the local environment.

The sampling of soil, existing water bores and surface water on the bases has begun. New groundwater monitoring bores are also being installed in the investigation area to assist in gathering samples.

Once the DSI is complete, a detailed report including the sampling results will be prepared and provided to the local community, relevant government agencies, and regulatory bodies.

Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment
Based on the initial findings conducted for the DSI, a Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment (HHERA) has commenced. The HHERA will evaluate potential PFAS exposure risks to the human population and ecology, and inform actions to mitigate risks. The HHERA is expected to be complete and findings released by late 2018 and will be made available to the public.

The findings from the investigations will be used to identify and prioritise site specific management actions to address PFAS contamination.

Defence is committed to regularly updating the community throughout the investigation. As well as community information sessions, updates are provided through the project website, direct mail and information sheets as new information becomes available.
