PFAS Investigation &
Management Program

RAAF Base Edinburgh

Edinburgh Investigation Summary

Defence commenced a detailed environmental investigation to better understand the nature and extent of PFAS on and around RAAF Base Edinburgh in November 2016.

The PFAS environmental investigations are conducted in accordance with the National Environmental Protection (Assessment of Site Contamination) Measure 1999 (NEPM). Visit the Investigation Process page to view a summary of this process.

Defence completed the first stage of the investigation, the Preliminary Site Investigation, at RAAF Base Edinburgh in May 2017. The PSI included engagement with local community and key government stakeholders, reviewing site history for AFFF use and identifying PFAS sources, as well as preliminary sampling of bores near the base. Defence has commenced the second stage, the Detailed Site Investigation (DSI), which includes:

  • sampling in soil, groundwater, surface water and drainage lines,
  • investigating and modelling how PFAS moves through the environment, and
  • preparing the DSI report.
The most recent community information session was conducted on 23 March 2017.

Defence is working continuously towards the effective monitoring and management of PFAS contamination and continues to engage with industry experts both nationally and internationally to identify the best management options for PFAS throughout Australia. More information on the current activities being undertaken by Defence can be found at the Management Activities page.
