Defence commenced a detailed environmental investigation to better understand the nature and extent of PFAS on and around RAAF Base Edinburgh in November 2016.
The PFAS environmental investigations are conducted in accordance with the National Environmental Protection (Assessment of Site Contamination) Measure 1999 (NEPM). Visit the Investigation Process page to view a summary of this process.
Defence completed the first stage of the investigation, the Preliminary Site Investigation, at RAAF Base Edinburgh in May 2017. The PSI included engagement with local community and key government stakeholders, reviewing site history for AFFF use and identifying PFAS sources, as well as preliminary sampling of bores near the base. Defence has commenced the second stage, the Detailed Site Investigation (DSI), which includes:

The Department of Defence is holding Community Walk-in Sessions to provide local residents and business owners with an opportunity to discuss the progress of the detailed environmental investigation.
The Sessions will include a presentation on the progress of the DSI and discuss the next steps in the investigation. The community will also be provided with the opportunity to ask questions one-on-one about the investigation with Defence, contracted experts and other key government department representatives in attendance.
