HMAS Albatross

HMAS Albatross PFAS Investigation

Summary of the Investigation

In May 2016, Defence commenced a detailed environmental investigation into the presence of per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) on and in the vicinity of HMAS Albatross.

The objective of this environmental investigation is to identify the nature and extent of PFAS in the environment from the use of legacy firefighting foam at the Base.

There are three main stages to the investigation:

Preliminary Site Investigation
The first stage of the investigation, the Preliminary Site Investigation (PSI), has been completed.

Detailed Site Investigation
The Detailed Site Investigation (DSI) has been completed and involved sampling on-base and in the surrounding region.

Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment
Based on the initial findings conducted for the DSI a Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment (HHERA) has been conducted. The HHERA evaluated potential exposure pathways to people, plants and animals, and informed actions to mitigate risks. The HHERA was completed in November 2017.

In order to address some gaps in the HHERA data, Defence undertook additional sampling and published an addendum in June 2018. The HHERA and HHERA addendum are available on the publications page.

Next steps
A PFAS Management Area Plan is currently being developed to manage potential PFAS exposure to human health and the environment posed by the legacy PFAS contamination both on-base and off-base. This plan is informed by the findings of the environmental investigation.
Further information on the investigation process can be found at the investigation process page.

The findings from the investigations will be used to identify and prioritise site specific management actions to address PFAS contamination.

Defence is committed to regularly updating the community throughout the investigation. As well as community engagement events, updates are provided through the project website, newsletters and factsheets as new information becomes available.

Community Notice

On 7 May 2018, as a precautionary measure, the NSW Government recommended that people who frequently catch fish from Currambene Creek limit their weekly intake of certain species.

This precautionary advice was informed by the sampling undertaken by Defence as part of the HMAS Albatross PFAS Environmental Investigation.

Visit the NSW EPA Website for further information.
