Anglesea Barracks, Battery Point, Tas
The Department of Defence owns and uses a variety of places that are of natural, indigenous and built heritage value.
As well as being places of heritage value, these places are an essential element of the Defence estate and help ensure the long-term sustainability of the Australian Defence Force’s capability. Defence recognises its obligations and is committed to managing these places as active sites in sympathy with their heritage and community value.
Defence understands that these places are significant to the broader Australian community. It is therefore important that Defence manages its heritage places openly, demonstrating to the community that it is a leader in heritage management.
Defence has prepared twenty-seven draft Heritage Management Plans (HMPs) for sites on the Defence estate that are listed on the Commonwealth Heritage List. These plans have been prepared in accordance with section 341S of the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act). Defence is required to give public notice of its intentions under the EPBC Act to finalise these HMPs and seek public comment on these plans.
Accordingly, Defence is seeking comments on the draft HMPs from interested persons and organisations. Comments received will be considered in the review and finalisation of the HMPs.
We are inviting comments from the public. Comments close 30 April 2010.
