Changes to Member With Dependants (Unaccompanied) Policy

From 17 February 2011 changes to employment conditions will allow more members of the Australian Defence Force to receive benefits when they live in separate locations to their families.

The intent of the changes is to help more members with the cost of maintaining two homes when they are separated from their dependants.

The range of benefits provided to a member who is categorised as a member with dependants (unaccompanied) might include:

MWD(U) categorisation is not always available when members live separately from their dependants. For instance, a member might not be able to claim the member with dependants (unaccompanied) category and benefits for dependants who are not part of their household. Examples include a member who has children from a previous relationship who do not normally live with the member, and a member with  children who live separately from the member.

It is important to note that a removal at Commonwealth expense and subsidised housing is not normally provided by Defence if dependants choose to move to a personal location. Removal and/or housing benefits are only provided in circumstances that are directly related to Service requirements or in approved compassionate circumstances.

Members may apply for MWD(U) categorisation using Web Form AD291.
