Changes to ADF Carer's Leave
On 1 December 2012, changes to the carer's leave benefits
available to Australian Defence Force (ADF) members will take effect.
The aim of these changes is to provide greater flexibility
to serving women and men to balance their family and work commitments. It supports
implementation of the Pathway to Change initiative to achieve a respectful,
fair and inclusive organisation.
The changes to carer's leave are:
- The number of carer's leave days which may be approved
in a leave year will increase from five to 10.
- Carer's leave beyond 10 days may be approved at the
discretion of Director General Navy People, Director General Personnel - Army,
or Director General Personnel - Air Force. This is a new provision.
- The circumstances in which carer's leave may be granted
will be extended to include when a member is required to provide care and
support to their dependants who they live with, when those dependants are
injured or affected by an unexpected emergency, as well as when the member's
dependants are sick.
- From 1 December 2012, documentary evidence must be
provided to support an application for carer's leave when a dependant is
sick or injured if the period of leave is longer than three consecutive
working days. Supervisors may request supporting documents for carer's leave
for less than the three days. This is a new provision.
- Carer's leave for an unexpected emergency may only be
granted for a maximum of two days for each occurrence. This is a new
provision.
