Division 6: Trainee allowance

Commencement

1.

This Determination commences on 8 January 2009.

Purpose

2.

Trainee Allowance recognises the range of disabilities to which trainees are exposed to while undertaking training.

Member who is eligible for Trainee Allowance

3.

This Determination applies to a member of the Permanent Force who is paid salary under one of the following training capacities listed in Part 1 of Schedule B.13 to Determination No. 15 of 2008, Salaries:

(a)

Normal entry recruit during basic recruit training;

 

(b)

Member undergoing initial category or trade or employment training;

 

(c)

Member undertaking a combination of degree course and officer training, or study in preparation for such a course;

 

(d)

Member undergoing officer training and not undertaking a degree course.

Member who is not eligible for Trainee Allowance

4.1

This determination does not apply to a member of the Permanent Force who is paid salary under one of the following training capacities in Part 1 of Schedule B.13 of Determination No. 15 of 2008, Salaries:

(a)

Trainee, other than a member referred to in item 2 of Part 1 of Schedule B.13, undertaking a Certificate of Technology course;

 

(b)

Member participating in the undergraduate entry scheme;

 

(c)

Member participating in the Officer Tertiary Recruitment Scheme who immediately before entering the scheme was not a member rendering continuous full-time service;

 

(d)

Member participating in the graduate medical scheme who immediately before entering the scheme was not a member rendering continuous full-time service.


 

 

Exception: A member listed in subclauses 4.1 (a), (b) or (c) is eligible for the Trainee Allowance on a pro-rata basis if the member is required to attend Australian Defence Force training during semester breaks.

4.2

In any period for which a member is paid a non-reduction salary as an incentive to train, Trainee Allowance is not payable to the member.

Rate of Allowance

5.

A member to whom this Determination applies will be paid Trainee Allowance at the rate of $8,224 a year for any period for which salary is payable from the date of enlistment until the member completes training.

Working out Fortnightly and Daily Rates

6.1

The annual rate of trainee allowance is payable on a fortnightly basis.

6.2

Where any payment is made to a member fortnightly, the fortnightly rate of payment is to be calculated in accordance with the following formula:

(A x 14) ÷ 365

where A is the annual rate of payment.

6.3

The daily rate of an annual payment is one fourteenth part of the fortnightly rate of payment.
