Division 3: Diving allowance

Purpose

G4.17

Diving allowance is paid in recognition of:

a.

diving duties performed by members whose normal specified functions of employment do not include diving; and

b.

the need to attract and retain such members.

Citation

1.

This Determination may be cited as Determination No. 6 of 1998, Diving Allowance.

Commencement

2.

This Determination commences on 5 March 1998.

Definitions

In this Determination:

 

“qualified diver” means a member who holds the qualifications required to be held by a diver in the arm of the Defence Force in which the member is serving;

 

“qualified diving instructor” means a member who holds the qualifications required to be held by a diving instructor at the Army Diving School;

 

“qualified medical member” means a member who holds the qualifications required to be held by a medical member in the arm of the Defence Force in which the member is serving.

Diving Allowance

4.

A member is entitled to Diving Allowance at the rate of:

 

(a)

in the case of a qualified diver who is required to undertake diving duties - $53.30 for each day on which the member undertakes such duties (up to a limit of 40 days a year);

 

(aa)

in the case of a member who is:

 

(i)

a qualified medical member but not a qualified diver; or

 

(ii)

under training to become a qualified medical member,

 

 

and who is required to provide therapeutic treatment in a recompression chamber — $36.57 for each day on which the member undertakes such duties;

 

(b)

in the case of a qualified diving instructor who is posted to a position of diving instructor at the Army Diving School and required to undertake regular diving duties – $5,419 a year while the member undertakes such duties; and

 

(c)

in the case of a member who is engaged in diving training to become a qualified diver – $30.47 for each day on which the member dives in connection with such training.

Allowance not payable

5.1

A member is not entitled to diving allowance while the member is entitled to submarine escape allowance.

5.2

Determination No. 4 of 2008, Allowance for Specialist Operations (Column 5 of Schedules 1 and 2) and Determination No. 5 of 2008, Special Forces Disability Allowance (Column 6 of Schedule 1), prescribe whether a member receiving either of those allowances may also be paid Diving Allowance.

Calculation of fortnightly and daily rates

6.1

If any payment is made to a member fortnightly, the fortnightly rate of payment is to be calculated in accordance with the formula:

where A is the annual rate of payment.

6.2

The daily rate of any payment is one fourteenth part of the fortnightly rate of payment.
