Submarine Escape Allowance

Background

Submarine Escape Allowance (SEA) is paid to instructors, trainee instructors and trainees in recognition of the additional skills, stress and responsibility involved in their work at the facility, and to members undertaking courses at the facility in recognition of the disabilities associated with submarine escape training. SEA is payable to instructors as an annual allowance, and as a daily rate for trainees. The trainee instructor rate is paid on a pro-rata basis and limited to two thirds of the instructor rate. The open-water escape component is paid on-occurrence at two tiers dependent on the depth of the ascent.

Outcome

The DFRT released a statement on 19 January 2009.  The structure and amount of the allowance remains current and the allowance will be included in a broader review of disability allowances in 2009.
