9.7 Travel costs

As part of your duties you may have to travel. If you need to be away from home overnight, you will be helped with meal, accommodation and incidental costs. The idea behind it is that you should not gain nor lose money from having to do Defence travel. The way this is done depends on the type of travel.

Defence travel model

At the time of publication, the Defence travel model is used for business travel.

·          Travel to attend meetings or discussions.

·          Travel to attend courses or seminars.

·          Travel for similar work-related activities.

The Defence travel model includes a credit card. Not all members are given travel cards. (See 9.8, Defence travel model.)

Travelling allowance

You may be given travelling allowance to pay for your travel if it falls into one of these categories.

·          Travel on posting.

·          Leave travel and reunion travel.

·          Group travel.

·          Travel that is not funded by your unit. Promotion courses are an example.

·          Travel that is coordinated by the Personnel Movement Coordination Centre.

·          ADF relocations.

·          Travel for operations, exercises, training and deployments, in some situations.

Travelling allowance is a sum of money paid to you, generally before you start travel. It gives you funds to pay for your travel costs.

There is more about travelling allowance in 9.9, Travelling allowance.
