9.6 Remote location leave travel
Remote location leave travel gives you and your dependants a break from the harsh climate and isolation found at some posts. It is intended to help you to go to the nearest city where you can go shopping or get medical services not available at your post.
Entitlement
Travel is by air to the nearest capital city and return, for you and your dependants. If you are in the Northern Territory, travel is to Adelaide.
Remote locations are classified from Grade A to Grade E. You can travel once for every two years of service in a Grade A location. If you are in a Grade B, C, D or E location you can travel every year.
Variations
There are several ways you can vary the travel. You can choose to go somewhere other than the nearest capital city. You can drive to your destination rather than fly. Travel will be paid up to the cost to Defence of air travel to the nearest capital city.
Usually dependants will travel together. However, you may be given approval for your spouse to travel separately. Another option is for your dependants to travel to the remote location, instead of you and your dependants leaving it. You should get advice about the tax implications of doing this.
In some circumstances you and your spouse or interdependent partner may transfer your entitlements to a close family member.
If you would like to vary remote location leave travel, you should seek advice from your local Customer Service Centre, orderly room or administration unit before you make firm plans.
New postings
You cannot take any unused travel after you leave the remote location.
Application to Reservists: No, except for Reservists on continuous full-time service.
