Vehicle allowance
You may be allowed to drive
your own car when travelling in
Who is authorised?
Not all journeys will be
approved. If you travel on duty you may be approved to drive your own car.
Approval can be given when driving would be more efficient, or convenient, than
other types of travel.
For example, public transport
may not be available or may not be available at the right times. There may be
no Commonwealth car available, or use of the Commonwealth car might
inconvenience the rest of the work area.
You may be authorised to
drive your own car where it is not more efficient or cheaper, but where car
travel does not disadvantage the ADF. For example, it might take longer to
drive than to fly but if you take leave to cover the extra time, car travel
might be approved. If the extra time taken would be inconvenient for your unit,
this option is not available.
You may be authorised at
other times under specified conditions. Examples might include during public
transport stoppages, or on recall to duty.
You may be authorised to
drive your own car on removal. Further details are in the Defence Housing
Authority booklet, Guide to relocation services. A copy can
be obtained by telephoning 1800 249 711.
Amount of allowance
The allowance is calculated
at a rate per kilometre of the authorised journey. The figure takes into
account petrol, car maintenance, registration, and many other costs of car
ownership. The allowance may be increased slightly if you carry passengers or
equipment, or incur extra expenses.
The amount paid is capped.
This means that the total cost of travel (including travel costs) must be no
more than the cost of travelling by the most economical means. (See 9.1,
Class, means of travel and baggage within
Application to Reservists:
