9. TRAVEL

9.1 Class, means of travel and baggage within Australia

You may have to travel on duty in Australia, when Service transport is not provided.

Travel should be by the most economical type of public transport. 'Most economical' takes into account fares and salary costs.

If rail is the most economical type, travel should be in first class.

If air is the most economical type, members ranked Colonel or below travel economy class. All members travel economy class on the Sydney to Canberra route.

Air travel may be approved even if it is not the most economical method, for some journeys.

In some circumstances you may be able to drive your own car, instead of using public transport, and be paid an amount up to the value of the airfare (see 9.10, Vehicle allowance).

For travel entitlements on removal, you should read the Defence Housing Authority booklet, Guide to relocation services. You can get a copy by telephoning 1800 249 711.

Application to Reservists:  Yes. A Reservist is not entitled to travel costs if attendance allowance is paid for the journey.
