8.4 Education assistance

Education assistance helps your children if they have educational problems.

In your new location

You may get help with extra tuition for primary and secondary school age children for set periods following a posting to a new area. Your child's new school will need to certify that your child needs the help.

For a subject that was previously studied, they can get extra tuition of one hour a week, up to 14 weeks.

For a subject that was not previously studied, they can get extra tuition of one hour a week for six months.

Children in years 10-12 can get extra tuition for one hour a week for the full school year. The subject must be essential to your child's career aims.

The extra tuition may be in any sensible form. It must be provided by a qualified person or accredited organisation. Computer programs may not be approved.

Education assistance is also available for children with special educational needs. You may get an assessment of whether they do have special needs, and help with therapy.

Your Regional Education Liaison Officer (REDLO) can give you application forms, advice and basic approval for assistance. You can also get forms from Web Forms. This is at http://intranet.defence.gov.au/webforms/.

Other education help

Other education assistance is available for year 9-12 students who need to stay in the old location to finish their schooling. Eligible school students can receive help with academic fees and boarding expenses. You will need to pay a contribution. Education assistance in other locations can also be considered in certain circumstances.

Payment can be made for education costs up to the value of a scholarship that a child loses when they change schools on posting.

Some tertiary students may have to study away from home because their course is not available in the local area. They can get help with accommodation costs.

Application to Reservists:  No, except for Reservists on continuous full-time service.
