Member's Guide to ADF Pay and Conditions in Australia – see Disclaimer – check PACMAN for full details
8.1 What category are you in?
You will be placed in one of three categories.
· Member with dependants.
· Member with dependants (unaccompanied).
· Member without dependants.
These categories are used only to decide what conditions of service you are entitled to. Each of the terms have special meanings which might be different from how the terms are commonly understood. For example, it is possible to be married and yet not meet the definition of 'member with dependants'.
These people are your dependants if they normally live with you.
· Your spouse or interdependent partner, even if he or she is not financially dependent on you. There is more about interdependent partners later in this Chapter.
· Your dependent children who are under 21 years. Your spouse or partner's children are also covered. Older children may be dependants if they have a disability.
· In some circumstances, a housekeeper or guardian for your child.
It may be possible to have another person recognised as your dependant. You will need to apply and request special consideration of your particular circumstances.
Member with dependants
You will be classified as a member with dependants if you live with people who meet the dependant definition above. You will need to be maintaining a home for them at the location of your posting, and live in it with at least one dependant.
Member with dependants (unaccompanied)
At times in your ADF career, you may be required or choose to live away from your dependants. If you are classified as a member with dependants (unaccompanied), your conditions of service will recognise the disabilities associated with your absence from the household.
If you think this may apply to you, you can seek further information from your local Customer Service Centre, orderly room or administration unit.
Member without dependants
You will be classified as a member without dependants if you do not qualify under one of the other two categories.
Change in family
Your family circumstances may change over time. You may need to be re‑categorised. It is your responsibility to inform your local Customer Service Centre, orderly room or administration unit if this happens. Because many conditions of service depend on your category, if you fail to do this you might be wrongly paid. (See 1.3, Applying for conditions of service.)
Application to Reservists: No, except for Reservists on continuous full-time service.
