6. RELOCATIONS

6.1 Separation allowance

Separation allowance is paid when you are separated from your dependants. It allows you to pay for other people to do things you might usually do yourself, such as mowing the lawn. It also assists you to make contact with your dependants, for example through telephone calls.

Daily rate

In order to be paid the daily rate you must be a member with dependants (unaccompanied) (see 8.1, What category are you in?) and separated from your dependants for longer than 14 continuous days. The allowance will be paid from the 15th continuous day.

You will not be paid the allowance if you are on long service leave or not being paid. You also will not be paid if you are getting travel costs or overseas living allowance, or you are a legal officer being paid a sessional fee.

It can only be paid to members ranked Major General or below. In some circumstances it can continue to be paid if you go home to visit your dependants. If the allowance stops after you visit your dependants for a short period, it will not start again until you have been separated for 14 more continuous days.

Continuous rate

You may be paid the continuous rate of separation allowance if you are in all of these groups.
